Building Culture

A Film by Gilbert-Ash

Gilbert-Ash presents Building Culture, a short documentary exploring five architecturally and culturally significant buildings that make a difference to the communities they serve.

Featuring the National Portrait Gallery, Cambridge Central Mosque, the Everyman Theatre, the Lyric Theatre and the Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre, the film shines a light on the collaboration required to bring ambitious designs to life.

"This place is the voice of Belfast, it is a people’s theatre and I’m proud of what we delivered, it is magnificent.”

Mark Carruthers, former Chairman of the Lyric Theatre

“It’s literally the most important building built in this part of Ireland in a century. I can’t think of any other building which is as important from an architectural and cultural perspective.”

Graham Thompson, former Giant’s Causeway Project Director, National Trust

It felt like more than just another building going up, it felt like they were doing it with some care. The whole project was very collaborative, working with Gilbert-Ash felt a bit like working with an extended family.

Sarah Ogle, Marketing Director, Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse

“This mosque is a hub for community and not just the Muslim community and that’s what makes it really special. It is not just a beautiful building it is a place for beautiful hearts to come together.”

Kahlid Najm, local worshipper

“It didn’t look as though it was a major contemporary intervention into a listed building. It looked like a listed building that looked like it always should have looked.”

David Ross, former Chair of the National Portrait Gallery
