Founded in 1960 by Royal Charter, the National Army Museum was established for the purpose of collecting, preserving and exhibiting objects and records relating to the history of the Land Forces of the Crown. It is the British Army’s central Museum, adjacent to the Royal Hospital, Chelsea and home of the ‘’Chelsea Pensioners’’.

The refurbishment opens up and extends the existing building, making it much more accessible and improving the flow of visitors around the exhibits. Additional exhibition space allows the display of many previously unseen items. Works included a new two storey extension with the changes providing dedicated education facilities for the first time.

Specialist teaching space, lunchroom and an adapted group’s entrance have been developed with the aim of improving the experience of the 200-plus learning groups who visit the Museum every year and attracting new groups in the future. Significant investment has also been made in the Museum’s collection storage facilities. Archive space is environmentally controlled to make sure that the collections are properly preserved.
